Working on book covers is so exciting… and nerve-wracking because, I don’t care what they say, people DO judge a book by its cover. At least, I know I do!
Since Moko and the Well is based on a Slavic fairytale, and I found the inspiration for it while in a forest in the Slovak Republic, I wanted the cover to be very earthy. That, and the fact that the main character, Moko, has amphibian traits (including a green tinge to her skin). So, I decided to add a lot of greens and browns to the cover art.
Now, I studied graphic design, and I can get by with drawing, but I’ve never had the specific talent of an ‘illustrator.’ Therefore, I asked my daughter’s friend, Bella, to pose for a photo from which I drew and water-colored the picture of Moko. Then I scanned it in and got busy with the digital alterations. And… voilĂ … here is the cover for Moko and the Well!
